In this post we will lay out numerous advantages of opting for white gelcoat, from aesthetic appeal to functional benefits that go beyond the surface. We’ll see if you leave convinced.
Ramblins'
An Argument for White
We would like to build all of our boats in white. Why, you ask? Because it is better for both of us. On our side, we can order our materials in bulk, reducing the cost and allowing us to pass some of that savings through to you.
Boat builders charge extra for special colors because it legitimately costs them more; it isn’t (usually) just a markup. Anytime you can buy bulk quantities of something, it will cost you less. Not to mention that every color change requires a considerable amount of labor to flush the spray equipment to prevent color contamination.
On your side, it’s cheaper too because, at some point, your kid/friend/spouse/idiot cousin is going to crash your boat into the dock/trailer/oyster bar and you’re going to need gelcoat repair. Your repair shop will have white gelcoat in stock and will not have to try to custom order Flamin’ Sparkleberry or whatever en vogue gelcoat color you picked years earlier.
But… we love colors
Now, if you need the boat in a different color, we get it and we support you. We will work with you to make sure that you get the boat that you want. We can order different gelcoat colors for you or personally, our favorite solution is a vinyl wrap.
Wraps give you far more color and finish options (3M 2080 wrap comes in 70+ colors). It also gives you a whole ‘nother layer of protection for your hull. In 3-5 years when you need to replace the wrap, you will have a brand new gelcoat finish under it. For a little more than the cost of a custom gelcoat color, you get more options and extra protection. You can also custom-wrap consoles, coolers, motors, swim platforms, and hard tops to match. The options become almost endless. Makes sense to us. Now, if we still haven’t convinced you, we’re going to spend the rest of the post talking about more advantages of white hulls.
Advantages of White Gelcoat
Timeless Aesthetic
White gelcoat is a classic choice that transcends trends and fads, providing your boat with a timeless and elegant appearance. The clean, crisp look of white not only exudes sophistication but also maintains a fresh and polished appearance over time. Whether your boat is a sleek sailboat or a powerful yacht, white gelcoat complements various styles and designs, ensuring your vessel remains visually appealing for years to come.
Heat Reflection and Comfort
One significant advantage of white gelcoat is its ability to reflect sunlight and heat effectively. Boating under the scorching sun can be uncomfortable, but choosing white gelcoat can help mitigate heat absorption. This reflective property reduces the surface temperature of your boat, making it more comfortable for you and your passengers during those hot summer days. By minimizing heat absorption, white gelcoat also contributes to the overall durability of your boat’s surface. Sometimes, the white can be too reflective which is why we offer a grey option for the deck floor. That helps to reduce the glare and fatigue on your eyes after being out all day. Either option is a good choice.
UV Resistance and Fading Prevention
The marine environment exposes boats to harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause fading and damage to the exterior finish. White gelcoat is renowned for its UV resistance, which helps prevent discoloration and fading over time. By choosing white gelcoat, you’re investing in a finish that maintains its vibrancy and luster even after prolonged exposure to the sun, ensuring your boat looks as good as new for years.
Versatility in Design
White gelcoat offers a versatile canvas for customization and personalization. Whether you prefer a classic, minimalist look or wish to add colorful graphics and decals, white serves as an excellent base for any design choice. This flexibility allows boat owners to express their individuality and tailor the appearance of their vessel to match their preferences, making each boat unique and distinctive. Enhanced Safety
In addition to its aesthetic and practical benefits, white gelcoat contributes to enhanced safety on the water. The high visibility of white makes your boat more noticeable to other vessels, especially during low-light conditions or adverse weather. Improved visibility adds an extra layer of safety, reducing the risk of collisions and ensuring a safer boating experience for everyone on board.
Conclusion and Shameless Plug
One of Atlas Boatworks’ stated goals with the 23F is to make a boat that is as low maintenance as possible. Choosing white gelcoat for your boat is more than just a stylistic decision; it’s a practical investment in the longevity, comfort, and safety of your vessel. With its timeless aesthetic, heat-reflective properties, UV resistance, design versatility, and safety enhancements, white gelcoat stands out as an excellent choice for boat enthusiasts looking to boat in style while enjoying the many functional advantages it brings. So, when it comes to selecting the perfect finish for your boat, consider the enduring appeal and benefits of white gelcoat for a truly exceptional boating experience.
