Ramblins'
I own an older (mid-1990’s) Mastercraft Maristar 200VRS. It’s an amazing boat for what it was built for – dragging people around on wakeboards or tubes while other people watch. It has a 330hp Corvette LT-1 engine that is still basic enough that you don’t need a PhD in engineering to work on it and comfortable upholstered seats everywhere. The key phrase there is, “For what it was built for.” We had a decision to make with the 23F when we were thinking about what it should be built for. We landed unequivocally on fishing.
The 23F is a fishing boat and as such we opted not to build seating into the front deck. A lot of boats in this size range try to straddle the line between runabout and fishing boat and, in our opinion, both elements suffer a little. Building seats into the front deck also adds tons of complication and holes in the deck. We have a whole other post about our thoughts on that here. That being said, it doesn’t prevent it from giving you and your guests a comfortable day on the water no matter what you are doing.
In this blog post we will talk through various options that you can add to your boat to make a day on the water more enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their age or boating experience.
Unlocking Comfort: Exploring Seating Options in Center Console Fishing Boats
Introduction
When it comes to center console fishing boats, choosing the right seating can significantly enhance your on-water experience. From console cooler seats to marine bean bag chairs, the options are diverse, catering to various preferences and needs. In this guide, we’ll delve into the world of seating solutions, exploring the benefits and drawbacks of console cooler seats, sitting on the gunwales, marine bean bag chairs, and leaning posts.
Console Cooler Seats: Chilling and Comfort
Console cooler seats serve a dual purpose, offering a comfortable perch while also providing storage for refreshments. The integration of coolers beneath the seat ensures that your drinks and catch of the day stay cool throughout the journey. These seats are a practical choice for those who value functionality and convenience. However, the cushioning may not always match the plush comfort of other options.
Simplicity is key when it comes to console cooler seats. With their seamless blend of storage and seating, these units appeal to anglers seeking an uncomplicated solution for short fishing trips or casual outings.
Sitting on the Gunwales: A Classic Approach
For many anglers, the gunwales of a center console fishing boat serve as a timeless and versatile seating option. Whether you’re casting a line or enjoying the scenery, sitting on the gunwales provides an unobstructed view of the water. The simplicity of this approach appeals to those who prioritize a direct connection with the boat and the elements.
Despite its charm, sitting on the gunwales has its drawbacks. The lack of back support can be uncomfortable during extended trips, and the potential for a wet seat is a common concern. Also, it should go without saying, but it is never safe to sit on the gunwale of a boat while it is underway. Anglers should weigh the nostalgia and openness against the need for comfort and practicality when considering this option.
Marine Bean Bag Chairs: Sink into Comfort
Marine bean bag chairs bring a relaxed, lounging vibe to center console fishing boats. Filled with durable materials that withstand the marine environment, these chairs conform to your body, providing unmatched comfort. Their lightweight design allows for easy repositioning, catering to anglers who prefer flexibility in their seating arrangements.
The casual aesthetic of marine bean bag chairs contributes to a laid-back atmosphere on board. Whether you’re taking a break between casts or waiting for the perfect catch, sinking into the plush embrace of a bean bag chair adds an element of leisure to your fishing experience.
Leaning Posts: Supportive and Sturdy
Leaning posts are a popular choice among anglers who prioritize stability and support. Positioned strategically near the helm, these seats allow for a more upright posture, reducing fatigue during long hours on the water. The addition of backrests and footrests enhances the ergonomic design, ensuring that anglers can maintain balance even in choppy waters.
For those who prefer an active stance while fishing, leaning posts provide a secure perch without compromising mobility. The sturdy construction and support make them an ideal choice for offshore adventures where stability is paramount.
Conclusion and Shameless Plug
In the realm of center console fishing boats, the variety of seating options allows anglers to tailor their on-water experience to personal preferences and activities. Console cooler seats offer practicality, sitting on the gunwales provides a classic touch, marine bean bag chairs deliver comfort, and leaning posts ensure stability. Ultimately, the choice comes down to individual priorities, striking a balance between functionality, comfort, and the unique ambiance you seek on your fishing adventures.
