In the world of center console fishing boats, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts are constantly seeking innovative ways to enhance their experience on the water. One trend that has gained significant traction is the use of removable coolers as multi-functional assets, serving not only as storage for refreshments but also as convenient seating, dry boxes, and casting platforms. This article explores the benefits of adopting this versatile approach in the design and use of your next boat.

Ramblins'

Coolers probably seems like a pretty mundane topic, but they can actually be a pretty pivotal part of your boat setup and can maybe kill you. I’ll never forget being a teenager and putting an empty Igloo cooler up on the front deck of my jon boat to use as a casting platform. I had seen a few of the newer flats boat come out with a platform up on the front deck and I figured that I could reproduce that by standing on my cooler. There was one key difference between their platform and mine. Theirs was strapped down to the deck and mine was not. Pretty shortly after I climbed onto my cooler, I shifted my weight too close to the edge and a combination of gravity and physics took over and the empty cooler rolled out from under me which sent me crashing back to the deck of the jon boat. I managed to stay in the boat but nursed what felt like a cracked rib for several weeks after. That cooler later met its demise when I stepped through the lid while again trying to use it as a casting platform.

Unlocking Versatility: Removable Coolers as Seats, Dry Boxes, and Casting Platforms

As boating technology advances, so does the range of accessories available to enthusiasts. Removable coolers, once viewed solely as containers for drinks and snacks, have now become integral components for maximizing the utility of flats and bay boats. This shift towards multifunctionality has sparked a surge in interest, particularly in the innovative “Coffin box” style coolers.

As the quality of coolers has dramatically increased over the last decade, you can now purchase a cooler and expect to have it for the life of the boat. It is no longer a, “replace every few years” kind of thing. There are obviously the popular brands like Yeti, but we’ve found that RTIC makes a similar quality cooler for a fraction of the price.

The Coffin Box Concept: Unveiling Versatility
The term “Coffin box” refers to a cooler design that resembles a traditional coffin – long, rectangular, and spacious. What sets these coolers apart is their dual-purpose nature. When not in use for storing perishables, they seamlessly transform into comfortable seating, dry storage, or casting platforms. This design innovation has reshaped the way anglers approach their time on the water, offering a blend of convenience and practicality that traditional boat seating often lacks.

One the real advantages of having a portable cooler is that you can remove it when you don’t need it or need the space for something else.

Comfort and Ergonomics
Removable coolers shine in their adaptability, offering superior comfort compared to traditional boat seating. Their placement flexibility ensures anglers can tailor their seating arrangements, guaranteeing a comfortable experience during extended periods on the water.

Storage Efficiency
Beyond their role as seating, removable coolers excel as storage solutions. They keep catches fresh, store bait, and provide easy access to beverages without compromising valuable deck space. This dual functionality streamlines the fishing experience, fostering a clutter-free and organized boat environment.

Versatility Beyond Boating
The appeal of removable coolers extends far beyond boating adventures. Their portable nature makes them perfect companions for various events and outings, from picnics and beach days to tailgating and camping. The ability to seamlessly transition from boat accessory to versatile cooler enhances their overall value for outdoor enthusiasts.

Elevated Perspective
Casting from an elevated platform enhances visibility, crucial for spotting fish. Coffin box coolers, with their flat and elongated design, serve as elevated platforms, revolutionizing precision casting and making it easier to target elusive species.

Increased Casting Range
The extended surface area of Coffin box coolers boosts casting range. With a stable platform and ample space to maneuver, anglers can execute longer and more accurate casts. This advantage is particularly valuable in challenging conditions, where precise casting can make or break a fishing expedition.

Conclusion and Shameless Plug

In conclusion, the integration of removable coolers, especially the innovative “Coffin box” style, as seats and casting platforms on flats and bay boats brings a myriad of benefits to anglers. From enhanced comfort and storage efficiency to the ability to seamlessly transition to various events, these coolers offer a versatile solution that enhances the overall boating and outdoor experience. As the trend continues to gain momentum, it’s evident that the days of conventional boat seating are giving way to a more adaptable and functional approach that caters to the evolving needs of modern outdoor enthusiasts.
